Chelsea Cloisters Apartment is a private home on the top floor of the 10 story 1930’s apartment block in the heart of Chelsea, London. The apartment wasn’t refurbished for decades. The design requirement was to give the dated apartment a fresh new look minimizing construction works and waste material. We proposed to “use subtle colours, which contrast dramatically in small pocket areas”, to enhance the apartment.
The client’s background is from the textile manufacturing industry, whose workshop produce sophisticated hand-made fabrics with elegant colours and textures. These can be seen everywhere in the apartment.
Since it is an apartment on the top floor, the space has an abundance of natural light. To echo the fabrics in the apartment, we use an interesting colour scheme with several off-white and light colour to allow natural lights to bounce between surfaces.
We use darker and warmer tones for the bedroom, so it feels more cozy, and a high contrast dark cool colour for the guest WC to create a cozy yet dramatic space.
To address the problem of excessive waste, we carefully removed only small parts of the old, problematic bathroom tiling and infilled areas with leftover tiles from previous building sites. The carefully designed colour schemes enhance existing building features.
