Located in the heart of Angel, this new painting studio commissioned by a local artist also included the modernisation of the ground floor living space of the 3-floor maisonette house.
A garden painting studio with a forest-like structure, inspired by the rich plantation and birch trees of the existing garden. This created dramatic views for the fully transformed ground floor living room, kitchen, and dining area.
01
Taking inspiration from traditional garden pergolas, the Studio’s forest-like structure is created with clusters of relatively small timber posts. As a result of this, a large volume of studio space is dissolved into layers of timber arrays.
A new kitchen is re-arranged to the centre of the ground floor living space so it can serve the dining room, garden, and living room at the same time. The vertical veneer to the kitchen cupboards also echoes the outdoor studio.
Other than the garden studio which was built from sliding glass screens within the charred timber posts. The design also included a 5m long stainless steel kitchen counter – a central feature in the space. It also featured new concrete and timber flooring throughout, which transitions seamlessly with the new external terrace decking.
New slim-frame glazed sliding doors further diminished the boundary to the outdoor space. Together along with the studio in the garden, carefully positioned kitchen units and a dining room display cabinet created a garden-like living space inside-out.
The design has proved to be not just a space saver but also gives an ultra-modern form. The simple garden studio design reflects the cultural reference.

This project is an example of how an external courtyard can become the centre of the living space in a dense urban context.
The art studio is a natural backdrop for the courtyard space. Overall the new layout combined with delicate design details created a well-defined, yet fluid overall ground floor space for an optimised work/life balance lifestyle.
To create a design that was rich in textures and shades, while maintaining consistency, most of the internal and external features are built from timber – from charred/painted timber, composite timber, multilaminar timber veneer, etc.
During the project, we worked closely with the client. The client became a part of the design team who featured from the design stage, all the way to completion. Thanks to our mutual understanding, together we created a piece of truly unique and beautiful architecture.
